honest, authentic, and emotive

There are few (if any!) things more real, raw, and emotional than having a baby. But for most parents, those first few hours and days after delivery is simply a blur.

The Fresh 48 session is special because it captures those intimate first moments of your new family. It is a chance for you to remember the love in your eyes as you looked at your new baby. I want you remember how it felt to hold your precious little one and know how little they were in your arms.

You get to remember every little detail … the wrinkled and flaky skin, the tiny toes, the wisps of hair … every little bit of freshness. There’s nothing like it.

the process

01.

The test is positive!

When you feel the stirring of new life in your belly, and you know that your life has changed forever, you also know that this time is so precious, you want to bottle up every tiny second. I am on call for you the week before and after your due date, so it is best to book your Fresh 48 session 2-3 months before your due date.

02.

The maternity miracle

Although I’m mainly a Vancouver Fresh 48 photographer, I also love offering Maternity Sessions as an add-on so you can remember the miracle of creating and carrying a life in your womb. It forms the perfect start to a incredible love story that culminates in your Fresh 48 session, blending seamlessly from one life stage to the next in your album.

The Big Day is here

Let me know once you go into active labour, and I will clear my calendar for the next 2 days. Then go and be the birthing goddess we know you are! Remember, you are already a mother, and your love, strength, resolve, and resilience will be on full display as people around you watch in awe as you bring this baby earthside!

04.

It’s Photo Day!

Your Fresh 48 session usually takes place the morning after you’ve given birth, allowing everyone to at least have a few hours of rest. It’s a quiet, relaxed, no-stress session, spent simply loving on this new little star in our midst, and being quietly thankful and in awe of the miracle of birth and new life.

05.

The Big Reveal

Within 2 weeks of your session, your full gallery will be presented in a tear-inducing slideshow. Watch (and rewatch!) and decide which collection to purchase. I’m sure you are going to love them all, but my commitment to you is always to only buy what you love, so choose the collection that fits your family’s needs best.

06.

Let’s talk about art

Your photos are part of your story as a family, and it makes no sense to keep those memories sitting forgotten in a dusty corner of your hard drive. Every collection includes a print credit to be used on products to display your gorgeous family photos in your home.

Investment

“BUY ONLY WHAT YOU LOVE”

By splitting up the total investment into two parts, you are assured you’re only paying for the images that you love. Pay the session fee before the session to cover my time preparing, photographing and editing. Then, after you see your photos, you can choose to purchase collections containing 15, 30 or all the digital files. I include gift print credits so your precious memories end up as printed art in your hands.

Session Fee

$250
This fee is non-refundable and payable before your session. It covers my time spent working with you before and during the session, including session preparation, capturing your photographs, and editing your images.
No photos are included in this session fee.

Collections

STARTING AT $500
After your session, you purchase the collection size that works best for your family. Collections all include a number of digital files and a gift print credit that can be used for prints and products in the online store.
The session fee is NOT applied to your collection.

…the most priceless memories…

These are the most priceless memories that Rochelle so wonderfully captured. There was a lot of snowfall, and she made it there within a few hours of our baby being born. We are SO glad we captured those moments as we would have not done so unless we came across Rochelle. Thank you for being so wonderful!

have questions?

Birth photographers document the whole process of birth. That means they will be photographing you while you are labouring, while you are giving birth, as well as the first few hours after baby is born. If this appeals to you, I encourage you to seek out the services of a reputable birth photographer (I can recommend some wonderful photographers). However, the commitment of time needed to be on call, wait for labour to progress, and be present for the whole time means that birth photography is extremely pricey and out of budget for many new parents. In addition, some parents feel that the labour and delivery process is simply too personal and private to share. A session with a Vancouver Fresh 48 photographer is a wonderful compromise – the cost is not prohibitive, and the session is short and non-invasive. You get a record of the wonder of a freshly born baby, without giving up the emotional and special private family experience of your baby’s first hours of life.

As a Vancouver Fresh 48 photographer, I travel to wherever your place of birth is, whether that is in hospital or at home. The space where your baby took their first breaths is an essential part of their story.

Storytelling photography is honest and authentic, and if you give birth in a hospital, the hospital room is a fundamental part of your birth story. The hospital bed, the blood pressure monitor, your name on the door, the clear bassinet, down to the green hospital-issue blanket … it’s all an accurate representation of what your baby’s first “home” looked like. Your slippers next to the bed tells the story of hours of pacing the room during labour. The Tim Hortons coffee cups lined up on the steel dresser tell the story of a caring partner who was there to support you along the way. But above all, these elements become a very blurry backdrop when you see that we focus on the people in the space, and their emotional connection. You will be so in love with your baby’s face that the background fades away (as it should!)

Giving birth is a huge, momentous, raw and emotional experience. And I know you’re feeling anxious because you don’t know how things will pan out. That is why my Fresh 48 sessions are extremely low-key, and non-invasive. My aim is to be in and out in very little time, without getting in the way of this very special and private time for your family. There is no formal posing involved, no worries about outfits and hair and makeup, and no concerns about how long siblings will “last”. Everything I capture is organic and focused around the baby (who doesn’t have to do anything but just lie there and be amazingly cute).

In addition, sessions are scheduled for the morning after you give birth, before you go home from hospital. This gives everyone time to settle down after the birthing experience, and gives parents the chance for a few hours of sleep.

It is highly unlikely that I won’t be able to photograph your session in the hospital. Unlike birth photography, where it’s a “now or never” situation, Fresh 48 sessions simply take place 6-48 hours after you’ve given birth, which leaves lots of wiggle room for unforeseen circumstances, including my own conflicts, unexpected C-sections, birthing complications, etc. If anything does prevent the session from taking place in hospital, we will just move the session to your home – the same magic of newborn connections will be captured! In the very unlikely event that something prevents me doing this session in the 48 hour timeframe, I have a few hand-picked Vancouver Fresh 48 photographer friends that I have on standby to take my place if needed.

I typically book out two to three months in advance. Because I will actually be on call for you around your due date, it is extremely important to book your session as soon as you can while you’re pregnant. This time commitment means that I only take on a VERY limited number of Fresh 48 sessions in any given month.

Each collection offers some (or all) digital files. In addition, I offer unique, heirloom products to show off your beautiful images in your home, or birth announcements to celebrate your new arrival, which can be purchased using the print credit included in every collection.

I look at each and every image I take at your session and hand select the best images. I am looking for images that are genuine, relaxed and full of natural connections (and flattering to all family members!). I pick a minimum of 60 images (usually more!), so you can be assured you’re getting a great variety of poses, angles and storytelling moments.

The pandemic has certainly taught every Vancouver Fresh 48 Photographer how to offer sessions that check all the safety boxes! It goes without saying that the health and safety of both my family and yours is front and center in my mind at all times. I will be rescheduling your session if anyone in my household has displayed any symptoms related to the flu within 10 days of your session, and I ask that you do the same. In addition, upon request, I can wear a mask during the session, and I practice very strict hand hygiene, sanitizing my hands several times before, during and after our session. You will be handling your baby most of the time.
