What to wear for your modern school photos

What to wear is the most commonly asked question by parents whose children have signed up for a modern school photo session against a black background.

Now, if you’re anything like me, you will wake up the morning of your child’s session and realize that the only clean thing in their closet is the Halloween costume from last year, and the neon orange rec center t-shirt.  Furious laundry basket diving will ensue to find the “cleanest of the dirty stuff”. Right?

BUT…
for those planners among you, I am happy to provide some guidelines and some examples so you can get an idea of how different colours and patterns show up against the black background.
First off, photos will be taken from the waist/shoulders up, so only the child’s shirt will be seen.  No need to go all out with pants and shoes (but I won’t stop anyone from wearing fabulous shoes…)

Simple is best

The best thing to wear is a simple light to medium toned (not too dark), one or two-coloured shirt/dress with no writing or logos. Although I know that it can be tough when all your kid wants to wear is that one Paw Patrol shirt for 5 days in a row, as soon as there is text or pictures on the shirt, your eye will just naturally go to that, in stead of lingering on your child’s beautiful face as it should be.

Textures like knits, or shirts with details like buttons or collars, are also great to add some interest.

Patterns

Patterns are great too if that’s your preference – think plaid, stripes, floral.

Avoid very dark and black clothing

Please do not wear solid black, as this will blend into the  background too much and create a spooky “floating head” effect! We were able to save this young lady with a scarf, but it will show you what happens if you wear a black shirt…

Siblings

For siblings, stay away from exact matches, but feel free to coordinate colours and patterns that go well together. Don’t let both kids wear patterns – if one wears a pattern, choose a colour from that pattern and let the other one wear a solid in that colour.

Hope this helps!
If all fails, any clothing that isn’t crusty or too wrinkled will do just fine too 😉
And if it ever comes down to a choice between a Frozen dress or a child meltdown … choose that dress every time!
