Cake Smash

Boho Cake Smash in Vancouver with Redhead Miss Maya

A boho cake smash? Sure thing! Simple, timeless, classic? Absolutely!

When Mom suggested this theme, I was already excited. When I met Miss Maya, with her flaming red hair and delicate features, I was over the moon. And what a little lady she was. Just look at her giving me the contemplative look right from the get-go!

She made me work for every single smile, but when it came … oh boy, she is going to melt a lot of hearts! But, hear me clearly, these sessions are certainly not about photographing a bunch of smiles. I always pride myself in capturing who the little person really is in front of my camera. And this little one, she is a serious girl. Which meant I got the most gorgeous, intense looks. And it is every bit as powerful as a laughing shot, if not more. I always feel like I’m looking straight into a child’s soul when they give me those long, serious stares.

Toes … enough said!

Mom had some beautiful florals in her stock pile already. A trip to Michaels and Winners (there is always something gorgeous to find there), some magic work with my florist’s wire, and we had a backdrop that was perfect for the boho cake smash theme. Add a cake, some fresh flowers, and voila!

Now you may think that all babies just love cake. Not so! In fact, more often than not, they are fairly scared of it! Granted, the cake is almost as big as they are! Maya wasn’t scared, she was just not into this cake at all. A few bites here and there, but those baby puffs? Now THEY were tasty! So what’s a photographer to do when her littlest client wants only to eat puffs? Give the girl what she wants of course! We still got so many gorgeous shots of her cake smash that I know Mom will treasure for a long time to come.

Can we just pause for a moment to appreciate those lashes and the sweetest of smiles? Gosh, what a great job I have, meeting these incredible little humans!

It’s not often that cake smash photos are converted to black and white. But sometimes, just sometimes, I see an image that is so timeless, so pure and deep, that it begs for a black and white version. This was one of them.

Love this boho cake smash session and want to organize something similar for your own baby?

Don’t hesitate to get in touch – I take care of all the set design and decor items for you, and would be happy to help you brain storm ideas to make your artistic vision come to life for you little one. Above all, we just have fun during this celebration of one year of life (and maybe eat a little cake 😉 ).
